Mini Model United Nations Debate
DNGHS participated in the SAIIA (South African Institute of International Affairs) Mini-Model United Nations(MUN) debate on Saturday, 11 May 2013 at Chesterhouse International School in Durbanville.
The Mini-MUN is a simulated United Nations debating session. Participating schools represent various countries at the UN simulated debate. DNGHS represented Rwanda and the topic debated was Millennium Development Goal 3(MDG3) – Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women.
DNGHS was represented by two of our junior girls, Raygaanah Marlie in grade 9 and <br>Shaakirah Motete in grade 8.
Algamdoelillah, DNGHS received a certificate for Best Position Paper. It was a real boost for the girls since it was the first time that they participated in the SAIIA mini-MUN.
The debate was a real learning process for them – they learnt so much just by participating! They’ve gained new knowledge of the world, and especially Africa, and certainly learnt new (debating) skills. Interacting and communicating with peers about issues which affect them and discussing solutions to gender issues were valuable learning experiences gained.
This is what the girls had to say about their experiences:
I hope, Inshaa Allah, that this is the first of many mini-MUN debates in which DNGHS will participate in future.
